ePSS for Android Smartphone

Instructions for Use

OVERVIEW TOP

This document provides instructions for viewing the US Preventive Service Task Force (USPSTF) recommendations using an Android Smartphone device. The user can Search the database for specific recommendations using criteria filters including: age, sex, pregnancy status, tobacco use and sexual activity, Browse for all specific recommendations grouped by clinical topics or retrieve saved recommendations using Bookmarks. In addition, the user can Customize and Save Searches, Bookmark favorite recommendations and topics, and Email results with, or without, patient or clinician personalization. A new feature of ePSS enables the user to search for recommendations using a Keyword.

The Search for Recommendations Screen (Figure 1) is used to perform a targeted search for specific recommendations. Select the Start button "Start Button Icon" to initiate a search. Optional search criteria can be entered to filter results based on:

The Reset button "Reset Button" is used to clear the search criteria and start a new search.

Search Results Display and NavigationTOP

As shown in Figure 2, the current Search Criteria is displayed above the search results, followed by a list of all recommendations matching the search criteria grouped into six tabs: All, A, B, C, D, and I. The "All" tab is selected by default and displays the all related recommendations. Selecting the Grade tab changes the display to include only recommendations for the corresponding grade level. In general, recommendations with grades A or B are grouped under the Category Recommended, grade C is grouped under the Category Selectively Recommended, grade D is grouped under the Category Not Recommended, and grade I is grouped under the Category Uncertain. A "Old Grade Definition Icon" in front of the recommendation, indicates that the old grade definition is associated.

Selecting a Recommendation in a Search Results list displays the Recommendation/Risk Factor Selection Screen (Figure 3) enabling the user to choose between the Recommendation Detail screen and the Risk Factor Information screen (if available). Selecting the Recommendations button "Recommendation Icon" opens the Recommendation Detail screen (Figure 4), providing General Information about the Recommendation with the following tabs:

Save Search TOP

The ePSS application provides the capability to save a search for later retrieval. Select the Save Search icon "Save Search Icon" on the Search Results screen (Figure 2) to open the Save Search screen (Figure 5), and enter a title for the saved search and any additional notes. Select the Save button "Save button", to save the search criteria and results list. Saved searches are accessed using the Android Navigation Menu, as described below.

Select the Saved Searches option from the Android Navigation Menu (Figure 6) to view the saved searches list (Figure 7). Swipe a saved search to remove from the list. Select the Email icon "Email Button", to send the selected recommendations to a patient.

Customizing Search Results TOP

Search Results can be edited (Figure 8) to produce a customized recommendations list by categorizing Recommendations as relevant and non-relevant. Recommendations designated as non-relevant are removed from the results list. Removal only reclassifies the Recommendation in the Results List without deletion. A recommendation can be swiped to move to the non-relevant recommendation list which appears at the bottom of the Results List. A recommendation can be moved back to the customized recommendations list by swiping as well. Customized Result Lists can be saved for later retrieval as previously described in SAVE SEARCH.

BROWSE RECOMMENDATIONS BY TOPICTOP

Browse by Topic displays recommendations by Clinical Topics, as shown in Figure 9. Browse by Topic can be initiated by selecting the Browse option from the Android Navigation Menu. The Topic Display is controlled using four tabs:

Select a topic from the list to view the Topic Recommendation Details.

Selecting a topic name displays a list of Grades associated with that topic (Figure 10). Select a Grade to view the Specific Recommendations related to that Clinical Topic, as shown in Figure 11, and provides the following tabs:

BROWSE RECOMMENDATIONS BY GRADE TOP

Browse by Grade displays Recommendation grouped by Grades as shown in Figure 12. Browse by Grade can be initiated by selecting the Browse by Grade option from the Android Navigation Menu. This feature provides an easy access to all recommendations without providing the patient profile. All recommendations are grouped into six tabs: All, A, B, C, D, and I. The "All" tab is selected by default and displays the all related recommendations sorted by Grades and then by alphabet. Selecting the Grade tab changes the display to include only recommendations for the corresponding grade level. In general, recommendations with grades A or B are grouped under the Category Recommended, grade C is grouped under the Category Selectively Recommended, grade D is grouped under the Category Not Recommended, and grade I is grouped under the Category Uncertain. A "Old Grade Definition Icon" in front of the recommendation, indicates that the old grade definition is associated.

Select a recommendation to view the details as shown in Figure 3 and Figure 4.

EMAIL/BOOKMARK RESULTS TOP

Select the Email icon "Email icon" to open the Compose a Message screen from a results screen (Figure 2). Enter the recipient email addresses, subject and send the email. Recommendations are included as an HTML attachment to the email message. The ability to email requires an appropriately configured and Android accessible email account.

Similarly, select the Bookmark icon "Bookmark icon" to save Recommendations and Topics for later recall using the Bookmark option.

Bookmark Search TOP

Selecting the Bookmarks option from the Android Navigation Menuopens a list of bookmarked recommendations and topics, as shown in Figure 13. The bookmark titles are displayed by results type, Recommendations and Topics. Swipe an item to remove a recommendation/topic from the list. Bookmarked recommendations can also be removed by highlighting the bookmark and selecting the Bookmarks icon "Bookmark icon". Selecting a bookmark displays the recommendation details, as appropriate for the Specific Recommendation or Topic. All Navigation and features appropriate for the type of bookmark are active when the bookmark results are displayed.

View / Email Saved Searches TOP

Select the Saved Searches option from the Android Navigation Menu to view the saved searches list (Figure 14). Swipe a saved search to delete from the list. Select the Email icon "Email Button", to send the selected recommendations to a patient.

Select a saved search from the Saved Searches List, to view the search details (Figure 15).

KEYWORD SEARCH TOP

Select the Keyword Search option from the Android Navigation Menu to launch the Keyword Search screen (Figure 16). Enter a keyword to view the search results listed by Clinical Topic. Selecting a Topic displays a list of Grades associated with that topic (see Figure 10). Select a Grade to view the Specific Recommendations associated with the Topic. Matching Keywords are highlighted in yellow (Figure 17).

PERSONALIZATION TOP

The Setting feature provided by ePSS can be used to enter information that is included in emails.Select the "Settings" from the Android Navigation Menu Screen (Figure 17), to open the Settings Screen (Figure 18).

Figure 20 provides an example of personalized email attachments using the data entered into the Settings Screen (Figure 19).

TOOLS TOP

Based on recommendations from the USPSTF, these tools are designed to help clinicians access information at the point of care. The ePSS application provides clinicians with a convenient mechanism for accessing available tools directly, without searching and viewing recommendations.

Select the "Tools" from the Android Navigation Menu Screen (Figure 18) to view the USPSTF recommended screening tools, as shown in Figure 21. A wireless or WiFi internet connection is required to access these tools.

Select "Android Navigation icon" to open the Android Navigation Menu (Figure 6) and scroll down to view general information (Figure 18) about the ePSS application, and to access specific features and customization options including:
